Projects

It is an aim of the Volunteer Ranger Service that we plan and carry out our own projects within the Queen Elizabeth Country Park. These projects will improve habitats for wildlife, allow more people to become involved with the VRS as well as ensuring that visitors have a more enjoyable experience when in the park.

Archaeological Investigation

The QECVRS committee has approached the Liss Archaeological Group with the view of setting up a dig within the Queen Elizabeth Country park which would hopefully take place in 2011.

There are a whole range of features and possible sites worthy of investigation and meetings are planned between representatives of our two groups to establish how the dig should be run and which sites to target.

An important part of this project is that participation and involvement is open to local residents and schools.

Keep checking back for further updates.

Holt Pond Restoration

This former firebreak pond once supported a wide variety of wildlife, from frogs, toads and newts to visiting badgers and deer. During the summer dragonflies could be seen skimming over its surface and the insect life attracted bats in the evenings.

Sadly the pond has now sprung a leak and has become little more than a muddy puddle despite attempts to patch the concrete liner.  It is no longer able to support the abundance of life that it used to.

We are trying to raise funds to fully excavate the pond so that it can be reinstated to a more wildlife and visitor friendly attraction.

Mobile Interpretation Centre

The QECPVRS committee had hoped to create a mobile interpretaion centre that could be used at events to advertise what we do and inform the public about what can be seen at the Queen Elizabeth Country Park.

Unfortunately the chassis we had wanted to use as a base turned out to be much more rusty that was realised and it would not be possible to repair it.

Therefore we are on the look out for a suitable chassis, possibly from a large trailer or old caravan that we can then build onto. This needs to have brakes and be sound so that it would be possible to tow it on the road.

Please contact us if you think you can obtain a suitable chassis

Sensory Garden

The area around the Annexe and adjacent to the main carpark would be a great place to create a sensory garden.  The idea would be to include a range of wild plants and have a path meandering through the garden to give access to all.

Rainwater run off from the annexe roof could be diverted into a water feature,  maybe using a solar powered pump, to create the one thing the park lacks - running water.  The garden could then include examples of bird and insect houses to show people what they could achieve in their own gardens.

If you feel that this is something you could do then please contact us.
